13 thing you should start doing today for living in the moment #livinginthemoment

In our present lives, our minds are exposed to a number of things. The constant changing technology, our own thoughts about our past and future, too much stimuli, too much responsibility, too much hurrying. Our minds keep wandering and we forget to focus on the present, the life that we are living now. And we are never happy or content.

We need to change this mindset and start living in the moment. And here are some practical tips which when implemented into our lives, it will change us. I am not an expert but ever since I have started to change my thoughts, I feel good. I am more stress free. So here I share it with you.

  1. Avoid multitasking
Many of us myself included are masters of multitasking, especially if you are a mom. Which sometimes is needed. But there are some moments we shouldn't. And it's much better if we didn't multitask. Like when we are talking to a friend or a colleague we shouldn't be using our phones. We should only focus on our talk. And even in those times we might be not aware of our mind wandering, we think of something else or someone. So make it a point to focus on the one task you are doing, be it reading, cooking or talking to someone. Do only single tasks.

2. Put the phone away.

Yes, you heard me right. Our phones have improved our lives but it has also destroyed our mindfulness. We always constantly reach to our phones. The moment we wake up to the time we go to sleep. So learn to put away your phone. Like when we are playing with our kids. When we are with our partners just be with them. Leave the phone. Make it a habit to stay away from phone for like an hour or even more. It won't hurt.

3. Turn off all notifications.

Just putting away the phone won't work for some if you haven't turned off notifications. The moment we hear the notification beep we want to know what it is and our minds can never focus on the task at hand. So keep it off or on silent so you have no distractions what so ever.

4. Meditation

Now you don't have to be an expert on this. You can start simply with a minute everyday. Decide the time and place you prefer. But repeat it the same time. Just close your eyes and your only thought should be on your breathing . Nothing else. At first our minds wander like a horse galloping. It's ok try to bring it back. Again and again. Start slowly. You will improve through practice. But it's benefits are huge.

5. Have mindfulness bells

What I mean by this is to create reminders around you to be in the present. It could be anything like a clock or a picture on your wall basically anything that's around you all the time. When you look at it you are able to snapout of your past or your future, wherever you have been.

6. Change your daily routine.

There are certain habits we do everyday without being conscious of it. Like washing our face and brushing our teeth. So try to change it. Like reverse the order you towel dry your body after a shower, take a different route to your workplace.

7. Do a task with your opposite hand.

Try writing with your non dominant hand. Or brushing your teeth or putting on your shoes or socks all with the hand your opposite hand. You will only focus on that task, believe me.

8. Pay attention to your thoughts

And once in a while we should pay attention to our thoughts. What are we thinking, is it good or bad thoughts. Is it useful or harmful. Is it negative or positive. This will help you know of your problems or the cause of your tensions.

9. Do a brain dump

Keep a book to write down whatever it is in your head. Don't think just dump everything on paper. By doing this we are de cluttering our minds. Sometimes our wandering thoughts are due to this overload of dump in our minds. So getting it down on paper will clean our mind. Hence we focus more on the present.

10. Feed the senses.

No matter what we are doing try involving our senses, smell, taste, sight, touch and sound. It helps to be more present. When we are walking through the road or a park. Use all senses to the task. The smell of air, the feel of the weather, the sounds the taste of the air. You become more present.

11. Periodically stop and smile

Sometimes we are so caught up in life with all the hurrying and worrying. Stop for a while periodically and smile. After a hectic day , think of what you have and enjoy it. Be grateful and thankful. Appreciate what you have. Smile often.

12. Focus on others

Step out of your world into other people's world. Working with other people and being around people will also put you in the present. Think positively about someone else, all the good they are doing. Volunteering to help others and participating with people all are helpful ways to being in the present.

13. Snap out of it

Whenever you catch yourself doing things out of habit, STOP. Snap out of it. Get back to the present, concentrate on the task you are handling now.

Gradually by implementing these tricks you will get more mindfulness and be more present.
